Prepare Your Car, Sigh, for Winter

Summer isn't technically over but it's come to its unofficial end. I know, I know. You don't want to think about it, but it's time to face the facts: cold weather will be on its way before you can say "seat warmer." To that end, it's also time to prepare your car for the upcoming winter. Your car is typically the second largest investment you will make (guess what the first one is: your car lives in its garage), protecting and maintaining your car is key to keeping it running smoothly, efficiently and for a long period of time.

Remember to:

* Have the radiator system serviced, or check the antifreeze level yourself with an antifreeze tester. Add antifreeze, if needed.

* Replace windshield-wiper fluid with a wintertime mixture. Consider replacing wiper blades as well.

* Replace any worn tires; check the air pressure in the tires.

* During winter, keep the gas tank near full to help avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.

* Change your oil regularly: A regular oil change is the service most likely to help prolong the life of your vehicle, and it's especially important to keep in mind before you head out on any long road trips. And don't just top it off. Use high-quality motor oil that can help your engine get the lubricant protection it needs.

* Protect critical engine parts. Before taking a long trip or if you drive a lot, visit your dealer or mechanic and make sure your car is properly tuned. Regular vehicle maintenance can improve gas mileage by an average of four percent.

* Keep your tires properly inflated. Make sure tires are at the correct pressure but not over- or under-inflated. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, keeping tires at the correct pressure can improve your gasoline mileage by more than 3 percent.

Keep your car healthy and it'll keep you happy.
