Exercising during pregnancy benefits both mother and baby. Not only does it help expectant mothers feel energetic, it also helps control weight gain and increases stamina and muscle strength all of which are vital for labor and life thereafter.
Orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Dr. Katie Vadasdi of Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialists, obstetrician Dr. Catherine Berzolla and physical therapist Alicia Hirscht will discuss the importance of exercise for pregnant women at a health education seminar called Exercise Safely During Pregnancy and After on Thursday, Jan. 12, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Noble Conference Center at Greenwich Hospital, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich.
In my orthopedics practice, I meet many women who are concerned about exercise safety and pregnancy, says Vadasdi. They want to know if and how they should modify their routine, how long they can work out and how much exertion is safe. Vadasdi says pregnancy is not a reason to stop exercising, but, she says, It is important to know how to exercise safely.
The seminar details what musculoskeletal injuries are common in pregnant women, exercises that should be avoided and some that should be priorities.
Vadasdi, a triathlete and alpine climber who is expecting her second child in February, will focus on changes to the body during pregnancy that can lead to musculoskeletal injuries. She will also cover orthopedic injuries that can occur and which activities are generally safe and comfortable.
Berzolla will discuss safe guidelines for exercising during pregnancy from the obstetrics perspective. Hirscht will demonstrate specific exercise recommendations.
The free seminar is open to the public, but registration is required. To register, call 203-863-4277 or 888-305-9253.
