Position Yourself in Tai Chi

The term t'ai chi ch'uan translates as "supreme ultimate fist," but tai chi is actually a fairly temperate exercise that is often referred to as meditation in motion. This ancient art has been practiced in China for hundreds of years and helps relieve stress, increase strength and flexibility, and improve balance, coordination and circulation. Instructor Gwen Roman has extensive experience in the arts of tai chi chuan and jin shin jyutsu. She has taught classes in Ridgefield and Shelton for many years.

Norwalk Hospital is offering an eight-week session of tai chi classes, beginning Thursday, Aug. 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the hospital's Patio Room. The class' emphasis will be on fundamentals of tai chi for health rather than the martial form.

Rabbi Jeffrey Silberman, the director of spiritual care at Norwalk Hospital, was a student in the class last year. "Tai chi is a wonderful form of exercise because it's gentle on your joints, and yet makes demands on your body," he says.

Tai chi chuan improves overall physical and mental health and is also an effective martial art. Its slow and graceful movements make the skill accessible to anyone regardless of age or level of physical fitness.

The cost for all eight sessions is $40. To register, email nutrition@norwalkhealth.org or call Cindy Allen at (203) 855-3548.
