In fact, July has long been National Ice Cream, according to the International Dairy Foods Association. The recognition was created in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, who also designated the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. That will be July 21 this year, if you're checking the calendar.

He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by 90 percent of the nation's population. In the proclamation, Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

The U.S. ice cream industry generated total revenue of $10 billion in 2010, according to MarketLine, an Informa business. About 9 percent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream.
