Plant Now for Summer Blueberry Feast

If you love blueberries, why not plant some bushes in the garden? Blueberry bushes blend right in with ornamental shrubs such as azalea and wiegela. In the spring, they are covered in small green leaves and white flowers, which will turn into juicy fruit by July. The bush stays green all summer and turns the color of maple leaves in autumn.

Fall is the best time to plant fruiting shrubs. The cool weather gives roots time to settle into the soil in order to provide luscious berries. Local nurseries should have blueberry bushes in stock. Check online catalogs, such as The Cook’s Garden, too.

Planting fruit bushes is simple.  Choose a sunny spot and dig a hole deeper and wider than the plant's root ball. Loosen the soil in the hole and mix in a shovelful of compost. Spread roots and place in the hole, making sure only the roots are buried. Covering the bush's main stem with soil might lead to rot. Water thoroughly and tread down the soil to eliminate air pockets. Add mulch to protect the roots through the winter.

Come summer, cover blueberry bushes with fine netting in order to keep birds and squirrels away from the berries. Yes, they like blueberries just as much as you!
