Personally, I'm enjoying somewhat snow-free winter, but that doesn't mean I'm not ready for the white stuff when it comes. I know where my snow shovels are - and they're ready for use.
Investing in a good shovel can make all the difference when it comes to clearing a path to your front door.
Plastic snow shovels work well for fluffy new snow, and are easier to use than metal because they're lighter. Plastic shovels come in kiddy sizes, too - turn snow clean-up into a family affair.
A metal shovel is best for hard-packed snow and ice. If you get a lot of ice build-up, consider buying an ice scraper whose straight hard blade is designed to break ice into chunks.
Anyone going on long car trips during the winter might consider a folding shovel for emergencies. Outdoor sports stores, such as REI, Eastern Mountain Sports and Outdoor Sports Center, will have a supply.
If you're not used to hard, physical exercise, take it easy with the shoveling. Tackle the job in stages with plenty of rest in between. And try a shovel with an ergonomic bent handle - it may save your back.
