Pick Bright Colors to Cheer up the Dorm Room

If you're sending your first-born off to college here's some advice. Whatever your kid might think, she doesn't need everything on that "must-have" dorm room list. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as move-in day approaches.

• Turning that freshman dorm into a cozy home can be a challenge. Colorful tapestries and posters can help disguise cinderblock walls. Just make sure you check the dorm rules before sticking things up.

• Buy brightly-colored sheets and a cheerful comforter. You'll need extra-long twin. Since the bed often doubles as a coffee table or couch, pick a color that won't show the dirt. And try to coordinate color scheme with the roommate.

• Curtains and a couple of decorative pillows will make the room feel "decorated."

• A set of bed risers to lift the bed a few extra inches will earn precious storage space under the bed.

• Stackable plastic crates are a good way to organize small closets.

• Don't buy a giant laundry hamper. There's no room to store it, so opt instead for a collapsible one with wheels.

• Before you buy a refrigerator, microwave or rug, talk to the roommate. No point duplicating these big items.

• If your kid's college is too far to drive, shop when you get there. Or ship everything via UPS or FedEx. FedEx will ship duffels and other odd-sized items.

• Check the Tree Hugger website for great tips on how to be green in college.
