Parents Speak About Spanking

Are you a spanker? Some say it falls in the realm of good parenting to spank a child when the situation calls for it, but others say you should never strike your child because the situation never calls for it. Where do the majority of parents fall on the subject? It seems more parents spank their kids than one would assume.

The medical journal Pediatrics reports that 65 percent of young children were spanked at least once over a four-week period by one or both parents.

A team of researchers at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine conducted a study to determine whether there was a link between parents who use corporal punishment, and a condition known as "intimate partner aggression or violence." The study involved 1,997 children, all three-years-old.

Following are some facts revealed in the study:

* About 65 percent of three year-olds were spanked once or more during the preceding month, by at least one parent.

* Of the partners who acknowledged family aggression (87 percent), more than half reported occurrence(s) of corporal punishment and partner aggression or violence.

* If parents were aggressive with each other, the risk of corporal punishment toward the child is doubled.

Researchers concluded that corporal punishment remains common in the United States despite recommendations against its use by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
