Over-Sized Kitchens Help Pack on Pounds

A huge central kitchen flanked by every couch potato's dream -- a large sectional sofa parked in front of a TV -- is the latest trend in kitchen design.

But a super-sized kitchen could be part of the reason people are adding unwanted inches to their waistlines, according to an article in the MailOnline. Families are spending more time in their fancy new kitchen/family room, which is where the food is. And today's kitchen is always open for business.

Fully stocked giant refrigerators -- some kitchens even have two huge 'fridges -- and walk-in pantries stacked to the ceiling with Costco-sized packages of treats, make it easy to snack even when you're not really hungry.

When your mom taught you to clean your plate, she probably never imagined that dinner plates would become the size of a wine waiter's serving tray. Large plates mean larger portions. If you want to cut back on what you eat, serve your main course on a dessert plate. You can use the dinner plates for lower calorie salads.

Speaking of wine waiters, have you ever measured exactly how much wine fits into your goblets? You might be shocked. Those big glasses can hold half a pint, or more. Serve your wine in smaller port or sherry glasses and keep the goblets for water -- or beer.

Large kitchens have large counters, which are perfect landing spots for containers of nuts and cookie jars. But the best place for any snack food is out of sight. Don't tempt over-eaters by leaving high calorie goodies lying around. The one exception? A big bowl of healthy fruit.
