Organizer Transforms Chaos Into Calm

As far as Betsy Ritchie is concerned, there are too many interesting careers to stick to just one in a lifetime. Her path to her current job as a professional organizer has been interesting, to say the very least.  How many shark catchers do you know?  Professional horse masseuses?  OK – here’s an easy one.  Chocolate delivery girls?  

“I studied marine biology and worked in California for a while, then moved to the Baltimore Aquarium. I took care of the fish -- water quality and that sort of stuff. We also went on dives to replenish the stock,” said Betsy, adding that catching sharks was her favorite job, and that the best way to do it was “carefully”  No kidding!

But catching sharks wasn’t enough of a challenge, so Betsy decided a masters degree in environmental engineering from MIT would be fun, and that led to a job in hazardous waste investigation and management. “The army gave us a great deal of work,” she said.  It was at this time that a friend invited her to a class on crystal energy, which was a transforming experience. “I discovered a deep spiritual side that opened up a whole new world for me,” Betsy said.  She left corporate life and began a consulting business in holistic health, and supplemented her income by delivering chocolates. “It was an interesting business. People called up and ordered chocolates, a bit like ordering pizza,” she said.

Ten years ago, life brought Betsy back to Connecticut where she started a new business, Equine Alchemy, providing massage and energy therapy to horses. “I grew up riding round here and it’s a small world, so I knew a lot of people. Horses love being massaged – they get sore shoulders – and unlike humans they can let go really quickly.  The head drops, the eyes flutter and they make little moaning noises,” she says, smiling.  Unfortunately, the recession hit the horse massage business in the same way as everything else, so Betsy found herself casting around for a new venture.

“I’ve always been incredibly organized, so I decided to see if I could turn those skills into a viable business,” said Betsy made up some flyers and posted them at the local supermarket. The phone started ringing straight away. “A lot of people find they don’t have the energy to clear their clutter. I help people reclaim their space and turn it into a calm and peaceful place.”
