Old Pillows Can Wreck Your Sleep

Do you get up in the morning and wonder if you'll ever have a decent night's sleep again? If so, you're not alone.

There are many causes for insomnia, but before you invest hours and a fortune exploring medical causes, try this simple experiment: buy a new pillow.

Picking the right pillow for your sleep style can make a huge difference in how rested you feel in the morning. Your pillow should keep your head supported so that your neck and spine remain in a straight line. Here's how you find the pillow that's right for you.

If you like to sleep on your stomach, you'll do best with a soft, low pillow. If you're a back sleeper, you need a medium firm pillow. People who like to sleep on their side should pick a thicker, firm pillow, preferably one with a gusset that prevents the pillow from sagging in the middle.

If you can't remember the last time you bought a new pillow, try this simple test. If you have a polyester pillow, fold it in half and put a shoe on top. If the shoe flies off, the pillow still has some "life" in it. If the shoe stays put, toss the pillow. If you have a feather pillow, fold it in half and squeeze out all the air. If the pillow springs open, it's still good. If it stays folded, your pillow is out of "oomph" and should be replaced.
