NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk Hospital is the first hospital in Fairfield County and one of only three hospitals in New England to perform single-incision robotic surgery.
Dr. Alan Meinke, chief of general surgery, performed the incision on a patient at the bellybutton to remove a gallbladder.
According to a statement from the hospital, removal of a gallbladder usually requires four to six incisions and seven to 10 days of recovery. The robotic procedure uses only one cut and reduces the hospital stay.
We are pleased to be offering this innovative procedure at Norwalk Hospital because this new platform for gallbladder surgery will have major positive implications for our patients, said Meinke.
The hospital used a technique called the da Vinci Si Surgical System, which is the newest advancement in robotic surgery. The system will also be used for other surgeries such as hysterectomies, thoracic surgeries and weight loss surgeries.
This technology provides clinical benefits and efficiencies in the operating room that provide our community access to the latest advancements in minimally invasive surgery, said Dr. Klaus Thaler, chairman of the Norwalk Hospital Department of Surgery.
