The spending will toward hiring additional outreach workers to assist with signing up individuals with affordable health coverage. The money is distributed by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration.
Norwalk’s grant is part of more than $440,000 that Himes helped to secure for health care centers in Norwalk and Bridgeport.
The other two recipients are Optimus Health Care and Southwest Community Health Center, both of which are in Bridgeport. Himes' district encompasses lower Fairfield County from Bridgeport to Greenwich.
“Southwest Connecticut is already reaping the benefits of healthcare reform, and later this year, the Affordable Care Act will expand access to health coverage for thousands of individuals and families throughout the region who would otherwise go without,” said Himes in a statement.
He added, “I am excited that these three community health centers – which have already done so much to help expand access to health care in Bridgeport and Norwalk – will help lead the charge in making sure people are aware of their options once the affordable exchanges open up this fall.”
