It's going to turn green any second. It has to. What is taking this light so long? Maybe it's broken... If you've ever had some version of that dialogue with yourself when you've waited at a red light for what seems like an inordinate amount of time, that conversation might be coming to an end.
Designer Thanva Tivawong has come up with a novel concept in traffic light design. It's called the hourglass stoplight. If you knew exactly when a stoplight was going to change from green to yellow or in the case of the abovementioned soliloquy, from red to green, the flow of traffic might be expedited and it could make driving safer, as drivers wouldn't try to rush through intersections trying to beat yellow lights. The hourglass stoplight concept aims to put the light's internal clock in view of the driver by revealing the pixels in the light as they drain from top to bottom. When the hourglass empties, the light changes color and the process starts over again.
