It's out with the pyramid and in with the dinner plate. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has revealed a new logo of sorts to replace the aging and much-maligned food pyramid.
The new design, MyPlate is based on the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines. Less confusing than the pyramid, it was conceived as a clearer representation of a balanced diet. The "plate" is divided into four sections of varying size, of fruits, vegetables, grains and protein, and there is a small circle that denotes dairy.
The graphic also suggests limiting solid fats, added sugars and salt. Additionally, there are eating tips such as, "Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals ? and choose the foods with lower numbers" and, "Switch to fat-free or low fat milk."
