New-Fangled Farmer's Market Opens

The re-energized Westport Farmer's Market kicks off today from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. under the direction of new market director Lori Cochran Dougall. Located in the Imperial Avenue parking lot, the market will take place every Thursday through November 8.

In addition to the anticipated produce vendors hailing from throughout Connecticut and the surrounding region, this year shoppers can expect a more festive and broad-based program each week. Craftspeople, non-profit organizations, artists and entertainers have been invited by Dougall to join the market. Gardening classes will be offered. Chefs from area restaurants will rotate throughout the season, providing cooking demonstrations and tips for using some of the fresh ingredients available for purchase on any given day. Julio Cevallos of Westport's Rizutto's is slated for opening day. Later in the season, eateries from Norwalk, Stamford, Greenwich, and New Canaan will be represented as well.

Far more than just a source for fresh vegetables, the Westport market will be a haven for butchers and bakers and candlestick makers, as well as fish mongers, dairy farmers and more.
