Theres a popular trend in tables at the moment. Its called a live edge. Youve probably seen pictures of tables with a live edge in home magazines. I have a table one in my own kitchen, made by a talented craftsman, from two boards of ambrosia maple. Sometimes called wormy maple, this wood was at some point attacked by a beetle that ended up creating a beautiful grey pattern running through the wood.
A live edge is created when a board of wood is left natural along its edge, with no straight cuts by a saw. The bark is then removed by hand and the trunk's edge sanded smooth. The contour of the tree trunk becomes the main feature of the edge of the board. Most people can't resist running their hand along the uneven edge.
Last week, when I was at the Architectural Digest Home Show in New York City, I was astonished to find that almost every craftsman in the furniture section was showing tables with a live edge. I saw tables with wooden bases, wrought iron legs and high-tech stainless steel trestles. All of them with live edges. All of them showing the natural beauty of the wood.
