New Canaan Salon Brings the Glitz with Style

The energy in Salon Kiklo last Thursday evening was palpable as stylish neighbors gathered for a fundraiser fashion show to benefit AmeriCares’ Japanese disaster relief efforts. As it was the first warm evening in recent memory, there was a special springtime buzz in the air punctuated by bared shoulders and bursts of bright color.

“New Canaan is a small town,” said Salon Kiklo co-owner, Stacey Andrea. She and her business partners George Papadopoulos and Thea Tsiranides took over the space at 126 Main St., formerly known as Salon 126, in December 2010. “So we really wanted to incorporate as much of the community as we could for this show. Atelier360, Dorothy Mann, Irresistibles, J. McLaughlin, Potpourri Designs, Skirtin' Around, and True Blue are all showing current styles tonight,” said Stacey of the long list of participating local boutiques. “Benefit is doing the make-up. We did the hair. Red Grape provided the wine and our new neighbor Tuscan is handling the hors d’oeuvres.”

Area ladies of all ages modeled spring and summer looks in the energetic setting, most emerging on a stage-like platform at the back of the salon and walking the runway-like length of the narrow salon.

“I became involved in the show through a friend,” said model Anya Kopchinsky, who grew up in New Canaan. Anya, who modestly admitted to having some previous modeling experience, was a vision of summer in the coral and teal combination she wore, furnished by Atelier 360.

And one of New Canaan’s most active residents, Tina Feldman, gracefully stepped onto the catwalk for this international cause. Of course, I assumed she was the first person Stacey must have called when putting this show together. “Nobody knows,” said Tina, who previously served two consecutive terms as president of the Young Women’s League of New Canaan. “We all feel we were first,” she said with her signature gracious smile. “I’m just happy to be here and be involved in anything that promotes the community and does good for others.”

I couldn’t help but wonder if Stacey had some connection to those “others” thousands of miles away in Japan.

“The only connection we have is that we’re all part of the human race,” said Stacey. “And they really, really need help right now.”
