Nail Down Winter Hues

The countdown to the official start of winter is on, but with frost settling on windows most nights, it already feels like the Old Man has arrived. The time is certainly here to put away the bright coral colors of summer for fingers and toes and embrace the deeper, richer hues of the season.

“Ladies are definitely looking for different colors in the winter,” says nail expert Lily Lee of Nails and More in Westport. “Red, gold and even dark blue are all very popular right now.”

Here’s a quick guide to winter 2012 nail color that will make your style sparkle all winter long.

Red—No shade says “holiday” quite like crimson. The classic color is as merry as it gets. Essie’s “Lollipop” is actually billed as a more festive “candy cane” red, and is the perfect nail color for when you’re feeling like stirring up a little holiday mischief. Or go a little deeper with Essie’s new “Size Matters” from the color expert’s “Cocktail Bling” collection.

Silver and Gold—It’s not just Burl Ives who appreciates the metallic tones this time of year. Don’t let the tinsel have all the fun. Dress up your digits in festive finery like O.P.I.’s silver screen inspired “Not Like the Movies” or Essie’s original “Cocktail Bling.”

Blue Christmas—Navy is Jack Frost in a nail color, and the blue hues sparkle like so many icicles. Deborah Lippman’s “Lady Sings the Blues” lends enough shine to make your hands the center of attention at any holiday celebration.
