Michele's Pies Wins Big

Just when Fairfield County was getting used to having two locations for some of the best pies on the East Coast, Michele’s Pies went and closed the doors to its new Westport location last week. But don’t panic, pie lovers. The shutdown is temporary.

Owner and chef Michele Albano has been busy. Over the weekend, Michele brought the flaky crusted marvels she’s now famous for to the country’s biggest pie competition, the National Pie Championships. It was held at the Caribe Royal Hotel and Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., sponsored by the American Pie Council. And Friday morning, not long before show time, she appeared on the "Today" show live from Orlando for a little sweet talk.

While prepping for the contest at 4 o’clock in the morning, Michele lamented the absence of her 12-quart mixer on her Facebook page. “This 5Q is too small.” Despite the extra mixing, Michele took home nine first place ribbons for her wares.

Accolades awarded, Michele is now homeward bound for a proper grand opening celebration in Westport. Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17, the Westport store will roll out the berry-colored carpet for guests. The word on the street is that it’s going to be sweet.
