Friday saw plenty of events to commemorate the beginning of the month. Norwalk Hospital set up a resource table with its clinicians, and the Town of Greenwich held a two-day mental health first aid training session.
Greenwich's First Selectman Peter Tesei issued a proclamation declaring May as Mental Health Awareness Month, and other officials plan to do the same.
Greenwich Commissioner of Social Services Dr. Alan Barry and Weston resident Holly Hinds were also honored by Laurel House for their mental health advocacy.
Barry named as a "Champion for Recovery" and Hinds was recognized for her contributions as a tireless advocate for mental health and human rights.
The area will feature plenty of training opportunities this week across the county. Options include QPR (focusing on suicide prevention) at the Waveny LifeCare Network in New Canaan, free general mental health first aid training at Greenwich Hospital, and experiential Hearing Voices training offered by the Kennedy Center in Bridgeport.
David Fitzpatrick, author of "Sharp," will speak at NAMI Fairfield's meeting on Wednesday, and "Dr. Susan Bauerfeld presents: Talk Back to Worry" in WIlton on Thursday.
