With the unofficial start of the summer season almost upon us, you may very well find yourself in that awkward in between seasons fashion phase. Dont sweat it. Here are a few tips for dressing for the start of summer, and a few rules that are worth breaking.
Myth: Shorts are always casual
No way, fashionistas! Tailored shorts with sleek lines can go just about anywhere. Pair your favorite pair with a silk blouse and gold or beaded lanyard and a pair of sexy wedges and youre totally ready for a summer night out.
Myth: Sun goddesses rule
Give me a break. Its 2011. Everyone and their preschooler knows that tanning damages your skin. Theres no need to subject yourself to the accelerated ageing process prolonged exposure to the sun visits upon your visage. True, a little sunless tanner never hurt anyone. But gloppy products, splotchy skin, and bronzer-smudged clothes are never in style. Instead, as one of my physicians once told me, try embracing your inner aristocrat. Dewy, youthful, pale skin is naturally en vogue. Try moisturizing instead of tanning. Your skin, your towels and your clothes will thank you.
Myth: White out for summer
Sure, warmer weather makes wearing the white, billowy pieces you put away for winter feel fun and liberating. And why not? But dont banish the black just because the sun is shining. Chic, strapless summer dresses in darker hues are always elegant and appropriate. Trust your fashion sense and be sensible. Follow your instinct. If it feels good, and it looks good, you should wear it, whatever the color.
Myth: Don't mix and match your metals
I suspect Cleopatra -- one of history's sexiest and most fashionable divas -- didn't fret about whether she paired gold with silver. In fact, I imagine she probably loaded up on all shades of bling for her adoring public, not to mention her paramours. I say, layer your metals, blend them together, and shine on!
