Make Space for Beauty

There are stores where you can buy make-up and moisturizer, and then there are soothing, spa-like havens where you are taken under the wing of cosmetic and beauty gurus who walk you through your visit. Space NK, New Canaan’s brand new apothecary, is undoubtedly the latter. On my recent visit, I toured the store, got a crash course in their product lines and was treated to the signature Space NK beauty experience.

“Nicky is dedicated to empowering women,” said Deborah Bertrand, Space NK’s store manager, referring to Nicky Kinnaird, Space NK’s founder. “She hand picks every brand we carry, every product.” Nicky started with a single storefront in London in 1993, with the goal of offering “a carefully edited selection of high quality, original, and effective beauty products from innovators and specialists around the world.” Since then, Space NK has blossomed into an internationally recognized purveyor of things beautiful. The New Canaan store, which opened April 29, is currently the only Connecticut location.

After getting a lesson in Nicky’s favorite products, which include a borderline miracle-working triple action eye cream by Zelens, I was placed into the care of beauty expert Lisa Cito.

“How much time do you have?” Lisa asked me. This is a big part of the beauty of Space NK’s philosophy, the personalized service you receive. They offer complementary consultations, chair facials, and make-up application. Working within my timeframe, Lisa transformed my face. And that was before she reapplied my make-up. Her delicate touch and product expertise had my skin looking better naked than it has since I was in college, which was a very long time ago.

As she applied my make-up, she asked me about my preferences. And she told me about everything she was using, the colors, the brushes, and how and why it would all work for me. “You always want a little lift at the edge of the eye,” she told me as she brushed a subtle, sparkly daytime liner onto the outside of my lids.

When she had finished and I looked in the mirror to examine her work, I wanted to hug her. My face looked younger, smoother, and all-around-glowier. “I look so good, I want a lunch date,” I told her.

Nicky Kinnaird would be happy to know that, even though I left Space NK without a lunch date, I emerged feeling absolutely gorgeous. And that is an empowering feeling.
