Lower your Octane and Drive Greener

Some drivers think they're benefiting their engine and the environment by occasionally treating their car to a snack of premium gas. They're wrong, according to the government's fuel economy website.

In fact most modern engines don't require premium gas (unless of course you take the Bentley out for a spin) and they don't benefit from "ingesting" it. Excess octane creates more pollution, so unless your owner's manual specifically calls for the use of premium gas, don't bother. Regular gas is less expensive and less harmful to the environment.

Just in case you'd like to know how the Environmental Protection Agency feels about it, here's what they have to say: "Unless your car needs high-octane gasoline, use of 'premium' gas will not improve performance or emissions -- it will just cost you more."

I wasn't kidding.
