Local Designer Premiers at NYC Fashion Week

It’s a Girl Next Door Makes It Big story, with a sexy twist. New York City-born, Norwalk-based pop artist Hally McGehean has spent her life in the art world. She is a self-described exhibitionist with a seemingly fearless exterior and a determination to communicate through many mediums, including fashion design.

“As a child,” McGehean writes on her Website, “I was enamored with the sparkle of sequins and the bat of false eyelashes that surrounded me in the dressing rooms of chorines and the closets of cabaret singers.” Her first collection of “wearable art” debuts next month during New York’s Fashion Week.

McGehean’s previous designs include the racy Dirty Dirty Dress, a barely-there “party dress” comprised of laminated photos of parts of the male anatomy and attached by metal jump rings. McGehean modeled the creation herself for Playgirl Magazine.

McGehean’s pieces aren’t for the timid, to be sure. But her penchant for taking chances has landed her a retail collection with the Whitney Museum and now in a special New York City Fashion Week event, slated for Sept. 12.

McGehean’s pieces will be featured in a runway walk at The Highline, Manhattan's historic elevated park. The runway walk starts at Gansevoort Plaza, at the corner of Gansevoort and Washington Sts., at 5 p.m., and will be followed by a boutique showing of her collection at the SoHo Loft Gallery, located at 180 Lafayette St. on the sixth floor, beginning at 7.
