Westporter Susan Pike thinks of her Honda Civic's Caring for Pets Connecticut license plate as "a personal statement. She says, People often ask me about the pet plate and I explain that it helps fund the state's program to spay and neuter pets, to reduce overpopulation." A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each plate helps to provide vaccination/sterilization benefits for any Connecticut resident who adopts a pet from a municipal pound. There is an additional $15 fee for the plate, $10 of which goes to Animal Control. Since 1995, when the law was adopted, 50,000 pets have been vaccinated and spayed/neutered with funds from the license plates. Another personal statement on Susan's car? The Purr oval decal.
