Learning Never Ends for Wilton Designer

Heather McWilliam has been practicing interior design in Fairfield County for more than 20 years, but reckons she still has more to learn. “Every job I do I expect to learn something new,” she says. “I embrace new knowledge and bring it to the next project.” Heather’s work is regularly featured in design magazines, most recently in the fall 2010 issue of New England Home Connecticut.

She sees her job as helping people make educated decisions. So the more she educates herself about what is new and exciting, the better she can help her clients create their dream home. “Products that were great 20 years ago, aren’t so exciting now,” Heather adds. “Things evolve and change.”

These days green design is on everyone’s radar. While her longterm ambition is to become an architect, Heather's immediate one is to receive her certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). “I keep up with what homeowners want,” she says, and these days, clients are looking for energy efficiency.

A Norwalk native, Heather grew up making clothes for her dolls. Everyone thought she’d go into fashion. But as college approached she hesitated, as the fashion industry seemed to her so cutthroat. Her mom suggested Heather collect things she liked, and she found herself drawing furniture, perspective views of rooms and playing with color and fabric. It all pointed to interior design. After earning her degree at Marymount College, Heather worked with architects before setting up her own business, McWilliam Interiors, she worked with her husband, Victor Autore. These days, when she isn’t on working on house plans or picking out furniture, you might spot Heather driving her children Olivia and Chase to riding lessons or soccer practice in Wilton, where the family now lives.
