When K.C. and Christina Hart moved their family into a lovely 1928 Tudor, they knew something would have to be done about the kitchen. Both love to cook so they needed a set up which could accommodate two chefs simultaneously, as well as providing a spot for their two girls, Taylor and Devin, to sit and do homework.
The problem was that while they both loved the period architectural details that had been preserved by previous owners, they couldnt figure out how to create a new kitchen that wouldnt destroy the integrity of the original house, located in Noroton Manor.
The solution presented itself in the form of Jason Landau, a certified kitchen designer and president-elect of the American Society of Interior Designers of Connecticut.
Jason asked the Harts to come up with a list of must-haves for their kitchen. I cant tell you how many meetings we had to figure out the flow, said K.C. It didnt matter so much to me what it looked like, but it had to work. Christina, who is an interior designer working in the commercial field, was charged with selecting all the materials and creating a sleek contemporary look that works surprisingly well in the Tudor home.
Kitchens today have become the heart of the home, Jason explained. In most older homes, the architecture is outdated in terms of placement of the kitchen. Kitchens used to be more utilitarian so they were kept out of sight at the back of the house. The solution to creating a functional working kitchen is often to open up a wall so that the kitchen can communicate with other areas of the house. Sometimes the easiest solution is to put on an addition -- but not in this case.
So what did Jason do to create a functional kitchen for the Harts? The two main issues were poor flow between the kitchen and the rest of the house, as well as inadequate light. Jason moved a wall and a couple of doors, and added three large windows over the sink area. Careful planning created the perfect work triangle between the refrigerator, sink and cooking areas and there was plenty of room for a great eating area for the entire family. The Harts couldnt be happier.
