Kick Bad Habits to the Curb

Doing a cleanse does more than kickstart your health - it can help you to kick old habits, too. "A lot of people do our detox because they want to make a change, like get off caffeine or white sugar," says Carissa Dellicicchi, co-owner of Norwalk juice bar and vegan café The Stand. "Then, in the process they end up with clearer skin, more energy...all the benefits."

Carissa and her business partner/husband Mike Hvizdo offer 5-day all liquid cleanses (the next one starts on April 26; see our Food writer Wendy Logan's article on The Stand here). The couple makes it easy for their customers to stick with the program: Each day of the cleanse, you stop by The Stand to pick up six numbered bottles containing a variety of smoothies and juices made fresh every morning with ingredients like kale, cucumbers and aloe vera.

"It's important to drink them in order," says Carissa. "The greener ones should be consumed first, because they oxidize quickly and lose nutrients."

No need to worry that you'll starve on a beverage-only regime, either - I could barely lift a bag containing one day's supply or juices.

"People really don't get hungry on our cleanse," says Carissa.
