Making sure your tires are in good shape is an easy way to keep your car performing safely and economically. Take a few minutes each month -- and before every long trip -- to check your tires, including the spare. Check for:
? Pressure: Tires can lose almost half their inflation pressure and not appear flat. Underinflated tires can cause tire stress, irregular wear and loss of control, which can lead to accidents.
? Alignment: A jolt from hitting a curb or pothole can throw a car's front end out of alignment and damage tires. Alignment should be checked periodically.
? Rotation: Regular tire rotation helps achieve uniform wear. Guidelines generally call for tire rotation every 5,000 miles. Check your manual.
? Tread: Visually check tires for uneven wear. Look for high and low or unusually smooth areas.
