Am I the only woman whose husband has a malfunctioning internal thermostat? How he can wander around in shorts when Im freezing, despite layers of cashmere and fleece, is a mystery that I fear has no solution.
One of the things I liked a lot about my last house was the most amazingly warm furnace room. I used to go in there to warm up until the day Servco arrived to service the boiler. The technician asked me why I hadnt wrapped my hot water pipes. He pointed out that I was spending a fortune keeping the furnace room nice and warm.
If ever there was a call to arms, that was it. Those water pipes would be wrapped by the end of the day. I set off to Rowayton Hardware and discovered there are all sorts of pipe insulating options. Norwalk resident Sam Munshi, the store's manager, has all sorts of insulation aids for the home. "We are a full-service hardware store," he said, pointing out a couple of options for wrapping water pipes.
The easiest to install looked like a long foam tube with a vertical slit. You stretch it open and snap it onto your hot pipes, using a pair of scissors to cut it. The insulation comes in several different diameters to fit different pipes, so make sure you measure pipes before shopping. If the foam tubes dont work for your system, try a tape insulating kit.
