Keep Grunts, Groans and Germs to Yourself at Gym

The holidays are but a memory, but resolution season is in full swing. What this likely means is you've committed to hitting the gym at least three times a week, right? And you're going? Of course you are.

Following are some etiquette tips to remember as you sweat and groan your way to good health. Here are a few things you definitely do not want to do during your next -- or any visit to your gym.

• Do not make loud noises while exercising. Grunting and groaning while lifting weights or dropping dumbbells or bars with a thud instead of lowering them in a reasonable fashion are no-nos at a gym. Also, you might be a rock star in your shower when you serenade the tiles, but keep your iTunes to yourself while you're hitting the treadmill.

• Do not claim machines out of turn. Other people's time is just as important as your own. It's rude to throw a towel over a treadmill and then decide to fill your water bottle, chat with a friend or visit the bathroom before getting on.

• Do not use cardio machines for more than the allotted time. Most health clubs have a 30-minute time limit on cardio equipment when others are waiting.

• Do not spread your germs. There's nothing worse than seeing someone cough or sneeze all over the equipment you are about to use. What goes 'round comes 'round -- including germs.
