June Keeps Gardeners Busy

June is one of the busiest months in the garden. Here's a list of jobs that need your attention right now.

* Tidy up your Rhododendron bushes by removing faded blossoms.

* Azaleas and lilacs should be pruned immediately after they flower in June. If you wait too long, you'll damage the new buds, which turn into next year's flowers.

* Resist the temptation to cut back daffodil and tulip greenery. The leaves funnel energy back into the bulb for next year's blooms. Wait until they are completely yellow before removing them.

* Go through your flowerbeds once a week and pull out weeds. They steal moisture and nutrients from your plants. Mulch is your ally so if you haven't done so yet, pile on two inches of mulch.

* Make sure you're watering properly. Gardens need about an inch of water a week, which means a good thorough soaking and not just an occasional spritzing. A rain gauge can help you figure out if you're under- or overwatering.

* Turn your compost pile once a week and make sure it isn't drying out in the heat. Compost needs to be moist in order to keep "cooking."
