It's Time to Plan Your Garden

With the thermometer in my car a bracing 16 degrees on Monday afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised to spot not one, but two racks of flower and vegetable seeds at my local Stop & Shop. Spring is on its way.

Backyard farmers and flower growers in our area have already had their mailboxes filled with seed catalogs. If you’re a new gardener, now is the time to plan what you’ll grow this year. And if you’re going to start seedlings indoors, you’ve only got eight weeks to get yourself organized. The last frost date in our towns ranges from May 8 to 15, so you’ll want to have your seed trays and grow lights ready by the end of March.

Seed catalogs, in print or online, will inspire you and help you forget the frozen wasteland in your backyard. Here’s a list of my favorites.

Seeds of Change (certified organic), The Cook’s Garden, Territorial Seed Company, Kitchen Garden Seeds, Vermont Bean Seed Company, Jung Seeds & Plants, Totally Tomatoes, Exciting Gardens, R.H. Shumways, Burpee Gardening.
