Irene Teaches Valuable Gardening Lesson

If your garden is anything like mine post-Irene, I see leaf-raking in your future. Take courage in the thought that you'll have fewer leaves to clean up come fall.

I was surprised at how well my plants stood up to Irene's gusts. I'd wrapped the tomato plants in plastic chicken netting to prevent the wind shredding them - and it did the trick. Apart from being blown over, the plants look fine and no green tomatoes blew away.

My young fruit trees didn't do quite so well. The soil has been so wet, thanks to August's rains, that the roots weren't able to hold on, especially with the new rain from Irene. Now they're all leaning to one side. At least no branches snapped off. Tomorrow I'll have to do what I should have done when I first planted the trees - stake them.

One of the things I love about gardening is that there's always something new to learn. This storm taught me that new trees should always be staked - and that wrapping tall plants such as tomatoes, will protect them from fierce winds.
