International Designer Shares Glamour Tips

Larry Laslo, a leading decorator based in New York and Palm Beach, recently shared design and home styling tips with Westchester and Connecticut interior designers at the Shenorock Shore Club in Rye, N.Y.

An artist by training, Laslo's career took off after he was asked to redesign the Bergdorf Goodman department store. Today, he creates unique homes for clients all over the world, many of them featured in top design magazines. Laslo has also translated his eclectic vision into a line of fabrics for the Robert Allen company and he designs furniture for Ferguson Copeland, an American manufacturer based in North Carolina.

If you love Laslo's style and want to try giving your home a touch of his glamour, here are some of Larry's tips.

"I love plants with large leaves, like Philodendrons. Spray the leaves with leaf polish to give them a little shine."

"Use real flowers. Silk belongs on windows."

"The bathrooms in a house should have a common thread. Don't make every bathroom different."

"I love black and white floors. They have such a classic look."

"Every room should have a surprise. Character is the most important thing. I love collections - but clutter is another matter."

"Don't let people tell you that neutrals are boring. They're the color of the earth. But you'll need to add some pops of color for contrast."

"Mirrors always add glamour. A painting hung on top of a mirror looks stunning."

"A mix of styles, Regency with art deco, or an Aubusson rug with leopard skin, creates drama in a room."

"If you have paneled walls, don't be afraid to hang things over the paneling."

"Animal prints go with everything."
