Hop a Ride to the Greatest (Car) Show on Earth

You might've heard of or been to the Greatest Show On Earth, but if you've never attended the Greatest Car Show on Earth, now is your chance. The event takes place Saturday, June 12, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Hillcrest Middle High School in Trumbull.

The show, an annual event related to the Barnum Festival since 1949, features some of the best classic and antique cars in the area, and is noted for awarding some of the largest (literally) trophies to participants. There are 50 three-foot trophies awarded to the winning cars and seven, four-foot trophies presented to runners up. Car Clubs from Fairfield, Westport, Greenwich, Norwalk, Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, Weston, Stratford, Bridgeport and other cities and towns will be attending the show.

Barnum committee member Ed Coyne, who's worked alongside members Don Darling, Ken Nicholas and Jerry Sisaid to set up this year's event, said, "The Greatest Car Show on Earth isn't only about judging cars. It's about the camaraderie of the owners who come to chat about their cars with one another. And it's about visitors coming to admire these great cars, as well as to enjoy the food and listen to a DJ spin tunes from the 50s and 60s."

Phineas Taylor Barnum was an American showman, businessman and entertainer who was born in Bethel, Conn. in 1810. He was known as much for promoting celebrated hoaxes as he was for founding the circus that became Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey.
