Have Fun in the Sun Safely

You'll be packing for the beach before you know it. Before it gets too hot out there, remember these basics of basking without burning. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen lotion, gel, or sunstick with an SPF of 30 or higher every two hours (even on cloudy days). Re-apply after swimming or sweating excessively, and don't worry about using too much - one bottle of sunblock won't last you all summer!

Sunscreen should not be used on babies younger than six months of age. Your only recourse with infants is to keep them out of direct sunlight as much as possible, and to use hats and clothing to cover up. It's easy for toddlers to get lotion in their eyes; for little one's faces, consider using a sunstick, which is less likely to spread. On kids and adults alike, remember to include all exposed areas, including ears, feet, and the back of the neck. Protect lips with an SPF 30 balm. Lastly, don't forget that the sun's rays are more intense when reflected off the water, sand or snow.
