Hats Off to a Royal Milliner

To royal family enthusiasts or Kentucky Derby fans, hats are an art form. From the bold and feathered to the flippant fedora, the hat is the original statement piece. April 27, Darien’s Double Exposure consignment boutique will host a special after-hours event to celebrate handmade creations by world class milliner and author, Susie Hopkins.

“We're flying in some pieces from London,” says Calista Hoster, an assistant manager at Double Exposure. “They're just amazing. Susie has created some really beautiful hats with Kate Middleton in mind.” Kate Middleton, of course, will wed Prince William April 29 in the most anticipated wedding of the decade. Apart from being poised to become a member of the royal family, Ms. Middleton is also known for her impeccable style, which often includes elaborate hats.

Susie Hopkins is something of a legend herself, having created hats for many previous royal events. Additionally, she authored a seminal tome on hats, entitled The Century of Hats: Headturning Style of the Twentieth Century, examining the glamour and history of headgear of every persuasion.

For Calista’s part, she couldn’t be more pleased. “Anyone who knows me knows that I’m obsessed with hats -- newsboy caps, fedoras, everything. So to have original hats by someone like Susie is really exciting.” Calista also appreciates what events like a royal wedding or the Kentucky Derby -- known almost as much for the drama of the horse race as for the dramatic hats the ladies in the stands wear --can do for her favorite accessory. “I do wish people would wear hats more often. They’re fun and whimsical. And women really have the option of mixing it up. I steal my husband’s hats all the time.”

If you feel like doffing your cap to the long tradition of millinery, drop by Double Exposure boutique April 27, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. You’ll find informal modeling of Susie’s styles, wine and hors d’oeuvres. And who knows? You might just find a piece that puts your style head and shoulders above the rest.

Double Exposure is located at 1090 Post Road in Darien.
