Go Natural When Treating Winter Colds

Winter comes hand-in-germy-hand with cold season. But colds aren't the only ills to befall those of us enduring prolonged New England winters.

Here are some alternative ways from The Daily Green to prevent and/or treat some seasonal illnesses.

Gripped by a cough? Add three tablespoons of dried thyme to one pint of boiling water. Let it cool, and then add a cup of honey. Take one teaspoon every hour as needed. You can store the mix in the refrigerator for up to three months.

Worried about the next round of winter weather? Stressed about all those snow days? Lavender can help. Apply lavender oil or a lavender sachet to your pulse points — the arteries at your wrists, neck and feet, for example — and experience a soothing moment. Other natural anxiety remedies include sipping chamomile tea and taking hot baths in water sprinkled with dried valerian root.

Did you overeat during the holidays and is your body reminding you of this fact? Too much high-fat food can make your digestive tract complain — and sometimes a little, er, loudly. Incorporate fresh pineapple as part of your routine to reduce intestinal inflammation, speed the breakdown of protein and, most importantly, to reduce gas. A half-cup in the morning should help.

Winter's indignations don't end with colds and sore backs from endless hours shoveling. Dry, cracked skin is often part of winter's territory. But you can fortify your skin by eating one ounce of walnuts per day. Within two weeks, the natural Omega-3 oils can help improve the elasticity and increase the natural moisture in your skin.
