Give Pets the Gift of Fitness

Packing on extra pounds is an issue during wintertime, and not only for people. As the cold weather bears down, it’s important to remember that frigid weather could make it difficult for your dog to get the exercise he or she needs to keep healthy and fit. Just a few extra pounds on dogs can adversely affect their health.

The American Kennel Club Canine Partners Program offers the following feeding tips to help leash in seasonal pet weight gain.

Know his healthy weight. Weigh your dog before winter sets in so you can note his healthy weight, and monitor it throughout the season.

Count calories. If you know your dog will be treated to a profusion of holiday leftovers, cut back on his regular good. Depending on how much you regularly feed him, try giving him one quarter of a cup less and see how he does (and how much he begs at the table).

Cut back on treats. Dog treats can be loaded with calories, and since your pup might not be getting the recommended amount of exercise during those cold and short winter days, treats can add up to extra pounds. Try to cut back on treats during the winter. Replace them with crunchy vegetables such as baby carrots.
