Get Your Garden Ready for Irene

You've spent the spring and summer raising flowers and vegetables -- and now Hurricane Irene is on her way to spoil your fun. Here are some things you can do to prepare your garden for the storm.

• Put away anything that could blow around. That means watering cans, charcoal grill, hanging baskets and smaller flower pots. Find a sheltered spot for your patio furniture and, if possible, strap it down. Move Adirondack chairs off the lawn. A strong wind could pick them up and toss them through a window.

• Pick any tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, melons that look ripe. Stake the plants with sturdy sticks. This could prevent high winds from snapping the plants.

• Cut off the largest leaves on your kale, collard greens and chard plants, leaving the younger leaves to keep growing. Blanch, wrap in plastic and freeze for the winter.

• If you have plants growing up trellises, try to stake the trellises.

• Make list of arborists. Falling trees are common during big storms. You may need to get help when the storm has passed.
