Jennifer Butler is one-of-a-kind, just like the clothing she designs. She’s sharp and witty, and she’s one heck of an artist. There’s no other word to describe what Jennifer does. Her handmade pieces manage to embody a feel that is both funky and refined: classic, but always with a twist. There’s nothing off-the-rack about Jennifer’s designs.

“This morning, I came into the store,” says Jennifer of her eponymous Fairfield atelier, “and this woman rushes in. She’d torn a pair of pants I’d made her and she had a big meeting in Manhattan she needed them for. ‘You’re more addicting than Starbucks,’ she said to me.” Jennifer laughs, but that relationship between designer and client is almost completely unheard of. Some style devotees would even call it sacred.

If Jennifer’s line and way of doing business are foreign to you, you have a chance to get acquainted on September 24, when she will show her latest collection at the Fairfield Theater Company. A dozen or so models will strut down the catwalk in 60-70 outfits for women and men, with a sprinkling of children’s designs tossed in.

“This is my seventh show at the FTC,” Jennifer says. “All the proceeds from tickets -- every cent -- benefits the theater.” Her passion for supporting other local artists is apparent. “FTC is such an asset to our community, I want to do whatever I can to make sure it stays around, that it doesn’t become another bank.”

Putting on a fashion show is no small undertaking. Models, hair, makeup, lighting -- they all take time and talent.

“Usually money, too,” says Jennifer. “Everyone is donating their talent to this show. It’s incredible. Local restaurants such as Health in a Hurry, Café Lola and The Greenhouse Grill are catering, and the food is all donated. The salon Hair is handling models’ hairstyling, again for free. The community support for this is incredible. It’s an artistic effort, and it’s a labor of love. We’re all invested in the community and the arts. What we do, whether it’s food, fashion or theater -- it’s all art. And so to collaborate with other local artists to do something that benefits the broader artistic community is amazing.”
