Get Prettier in Pink

Pantone, the self-described “world authority on color” on everything from apparel to architecture, has named honeysuckle the fashion and home “color of the year." Honeysuckle is a bold, bright reddish pink, and Fairfield County boutiques are responding to the shade's elevated status with enthusiasm.

"I've always loved honeysuckle," says Rosanna Coughlin, owner of kids' clothier Krik-it, with locations in Wilton and Fairfield.  "I find the color's intensity and sweetness to be the perfect antidote to winter's gloominess, yet it never feels overdone in the summer. It's engaging and uplifting - the perfect antidote to the brutal winter we just experienced."

But this pleasing pink isn’t just for the pre-K set. "It's no secret that strong pinks have always been en vogue in Fairfield County," says the chic Lauren Robak, owner of Minette & Rook, a hip, New York style boutique in Fairfield’s Brick Walk shopping center. "This area has a well deserved reputation for embracing the color in all its iterations, especially when it's paired with kelly green or navy blue. It's nice to see the hue move beyond its preppy roots and take center stage."

But what’s a girl to do when she’s more comfortable in basic black? Where should she begin to incorporate such an eye-catching color into her spring wardrobe?

Lauren advises that honeysuckle can be worn as clothing or makeup, or even toted along as an accessory. They key is finding the shade that works for you. “In beauty,” she cautions,  “be sure to take your complexion into account before incorporating this color. Women with olive or darker skins will look amazing in a honeysuckle lipstick, but fair skinned women should stick to blush.”

As for your pint-sized fashionista's wardrobe, pink isn’t likely a tough sell. But are there more creative color pairings for your little ones?

“Complementary bronzes and greens add whimsy,” says Rosanna, who also recommends combining honeysuckle with pinkish brown. “It will soften the color and keep it from overwhelming small frames.”
