According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between five and 20 percent of Americans catch the flu every year, and approximately 36,000 people die as a result of it. The best way to protect yourself against influenza is to get vaccinated every year.
And you can get your flu shot on October 5, during the sixteenth annual Senior Health Fair, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center, 90 Harding Road, Old Greenwich. The fair's sponsors are Greenwich Hospital, the Greenwich Department of Health and the Greenwich Commission on Aging. Besides offering a convenient way to get the flu shot, the fair shows seniors ways to enhance and maintain their health. They can meet with representatives from a wide range of municipal agencies and community organizations. Other fair activities include education, community information and health screenings.
Participants over 65 years must bring their Medicare Part B cards. A $30 fee will be charged for those without cards. Healthnet Medicare HMOs will be accepted and participants with any other HMO Medicare providers will be charged $30. A receipt will be provided to submit to insurance companies for reimbursement.
Drawings for door prizes, donated by local merchants, will be held throughout the day, and light refreshments will be available. Seniors needing transportation should call (203) 637 - 4345. For more information about the fair, call the Greenwich Hospital Center for Healthy Aging, at (203) 863-4374.
