Ford Fights Glare -- with More Glare

It's a sunny Sunday afternoon and you can't wait to watch a ballgame on TV. But you can't see a thing because sun glare has commandeered your screen.

You think that's bad? Imagine how automotive engineers feel. They're tasked with making sure cabin instrumentation is well lit and easy to see, regardless of the sun's interference. Because dashboards are now loaded with LCD screens, Ford Motor Company is endeavoring to make sure drivers can accurately and quickly access critical (and not so critical) information without the interference of screen glare.

Ford has created a room, part of the Ford Visual Performance Evaluation Lab, with enough artificial light to mimic the sun's effects accurately. More than 6,000 watts of power light the way to engineering innovation here. Additionally, the lamps are mounted on an automated track that recreates sunlight at a variety of angles.

And if that doesn't work, they can always try sunglasses.

Does sun glare affect your ability to expeditiously assess the dashboard? Let me know here.
