Fat Tax Heaped on Danes

In Denmark not only is fatty food bad for your health, it just got a little more expensive. Reuters reports the Nordic country recently imposed a “fat tax” on foods with saturated fats — such as butter and oil — as a means to curb unhealthy eating habits.

In U.S. currency, the tax measures out to $3 per 2.2 pounds of saturated fat per product. It was conceived as a way to help increase the average life expectancy of Danes.

The tax — approved by large majority in Parliament this spring — will increase the price of a hamburger by 15 cents and raise the price of a small package of butter by around 40 cents.

As in some other European countries, Denmark charges higher fees for sugar, chocolates and soft drinks, but it is the first in the world to tax fatty foods.
