Gay Gasser is one of those people whose minds never stop whirring. Better to burn out than fade away," she says. A Fairfield resident for 30 years, Gay has worked in real estate, brought up three kids in town, volunteered with the Mill River Wetland Committee, learned to row competitively and recently launched an innovative new online business, Mirth-in-a-Box. Its an anti-fruit basket gift concept, she says.
With so much to talk about, we decided Gay should talk about her role as co-chair of the Garden Expo in Fairfield, which is coming up March 19 and 20. The Garden Expo is the principal fund-raiser for River-Lab, an environmental educational program that is part of the science curriculum in the Fairfield elementary schools. Gay first learned of River-Lab when her children went through the program, and being the energetic type, she soon found herself on the board.
We realized we needed to raise money, she says. The group ran tag sales. They organized fund-raising dinners at the country club. "But the volunteers arent a high-heel crowd, they're 'muddy' people," says Gay. "They like to be outdoors." The Board started casting around for another way to raise funds. A good friend who was an avid gardener and Gays gardening mentor, suggested they create a fair focused on everything to do with gardening and the outdoors. She fertilized me with ideas! Gay says.
Garden Expo 2011 is in its eleventh year of operation and a popular event in the gardening and outdoor community of greater Fairfield County. More than 90 home and garden-related exhibitors transform Fairfield Ludlowe High School into a festival to spring. Youll find art, crafts and products for your home and garden, as well as free lectures and demonstrations. And you wont want to miss the chainsaw carver who turns tree trunks into magical creatures.
