If you haven't finished putting your garden to bed for the winter, Colleen Plimpton, gardening expert and blogger and author of "Mentors in the Garden of Life," has some tips for what to do in the garden before the snow falls:
Pull, cut and destroy Asian bittersweet, a non-native, invasive species. In late autumn it's easy to see the coiling, murderous vine climbing leafless trees.
Mow the lawn short.
Finish planting new bulbs.
Finish fertilizing old bulbs.
For those affected by the early, freak snowstorm, continue to prune damaged wood.
Store dahlias, cannas and other tender tubers.
Label any plants, such as dahlias, that you've dug up for the winter or you won't remember what they are in the spring.
Empty and turn over rain barrels.
Stockpile a supply of potting soil for indoor use.
Arrange decorative twigs and branches in containers.
