Dress for the In Between Days

The change of seasons seems to leave people perplexed when it comes to what to wear. On any given day in late September you can encounter all kinds of attire from shorts and sandals to down vests and turtlenecks -- all within 15 minutes. The mercury may be confused, but your wardrobe doesn’t need to be.

A few simple guidelines will keep your style on track and show the world you actually know what month it is.

*  Layer – Leave your wool sweaters and down coats in the closet. It’s only September. Instead, opt for lighter-weight jackets -- denim is dynamite right now -- or cotton sweaters layered over short sleeves. Long sleeves should still be in lighter fabrics like cotton or silk, and you should pair them with a tailored blazer that you can remove during the warmer hours.

*  Accessorize with a purpose – Scarves are a chic way to keep out the early morning chill. Again, the key here is to go with airy fabrics, and wrap them loosely. And don’t be afraid of color.

*  Skirt the issue – Skirts and dresses with bare legs and boots are a must right now! From open-toe booties to over-the-knee wedges, you should definitely be rocking this look over the coming weeks.

*  Check in with the weatherman – It may be 50 degrees when you leave your house in the morning, but by lunchtime you could be sunning yourself at an outdoor café. And remember, that mercury can plunge again after the sun sets. Check the forecast and adjust your scarf accordingly.
